Wool Pellets
16 oz bag of pelleted wool
Wool pellets are pelletized wool that can be utilized in potted plants and gardens as a soil amendment. The biggest benefit with wool pellets is their ability to provide water retention in the soil, reducing watering needs. They also have an NPK 9-0-2 value, so there is added nutrient value that will breakdown and release over time.
The recommended rate for potted plants is 1/2 cup wool pellets to 1-gallon potting mix.
Spring 2024, I planted 8 pots of cherry tomatoes and wanted to test out my wool pellets that Driftless Woollets pelletized for me. 3 pots were the recommended rate of wool pellets, 2 pots had half the rate, and 3 pots had no wool pellets. In the photo of the 8 potted cherry tomato plants shown, can you guess which 3 pots have NO wool pellets? (The 3 on the right!)
As an added benefit to each of these cherry tomato plants, I also used some scrap spring wool to cover the soil of each pot, and that, without much explanation needed, provides additional water retention in the soil.
